About

ClassAct Foundation is spurred by the sense of commitment of private individuals to devote their expertise, time and generosity of spirit in designing and activating projects focused on innovative education and information modules, and structures that will incorporate indigenous materials and craftsmanship and help generate knowledge. It aims to make vulnerable communities more habitable and humane through the proposed formula of CONTAINER+CONTENT, a two-fold effort to build generous social structures: the architectural design (the CONTAINER) and the cultural-educational programming within it (the CONTENT).

It began in 2013 as an initiative to rebuild schools when Bohol Island was devastated by back-to back catastrophes in 2013: a 7.2 magnitude earthquake followed by super typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda). It was founded under a GSAPP-Columbia University Goodman Fellowship by Filipino architect and professor Aya Maceda, whose design studio, actLAB, first joined forces in 2013 with Oplan Bangon Bohol (OBB), a grassroots organization comprised of Bohol entrepreneurs that was active in immediate relief operations. In 2015, The Office of Culture and Design (OCD), a cultural social practice organization, was enlisted to help ideate and implement the CONTAINER+CONTENT vision of longer-term involvement with beneficiary communities. The consortium of the three organizations provide a more complete aid package, multiplying the community impact of each other’s activities.

The Active School is ClassAct’s premier project, where the school is used as a locus for change. It is an architecturally innovative, eco-conscious and socio-culturally responsive effort to not simply rebuild communities that lost their educational infrastructure, but to build back better by expanding the concept of education to incorporate the greater community as beneficiaries in life-long learning.

ClassAct Foundation is registered with Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission as a non-stock, non-profit organization.
